Congratulation to our selected composers

#Synergy expert jury, formed from the respectable classical music experts, has selected 12 composers who will take part in two-week residency programs where they will be given an opportunity to promote their work, exchange experiences, and start creating the newly commissioned works.

In the Western Balkans, actual instances of commissioning classical music and overall opportunities for composers to work are very rare and insufficiently developed. To counterbalance this situation, empower composers, classical music commissioning and production, #synergy's special focus was set on the introduction of the composer-in-residency program.

Having a profound knowledge of the contemporary classical music sector in their country, project partners drafted a gender-balanced and age unrestricted list consisting of up to 10 composers, while the final selection was done by a jury consisting of 6 expert members: Ratimir Martinović, Branka Popović, Darko Brlek, Iva Lovrec-Štefanović, Vasil. S. Tole and Lejla Pula.

The 12 composers chosen who will be given an opportunity to work in a stimulating environment for two weeks and exchange experiences are Nina Perović, Milivoje Pićurić, Sara Glojnarić, Tomislav Oliver, Matija Krečič, Timotej Kosovinc, Jetmir Zaganjori, Kristi Soqipoti, Mira Milosavljević, Predrag Radisavljević, Kreshnik Aliçkaj, and Ardian Halimi.

Selected composers will write two new pieces which will be commissioned from each of them. The commissioned works will be crafted based on two aspects: one local, unique theme per project country and one universal theme inspired by European culture and values, arts and heritage, important music anniversaries, or different contemporary socio-cultural topics. Their new works will be presented at the big Festival tour, which will include performances at 7 festivals and music events organized by project partners.

Residency programs will take part in Kotor (Montenegro), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Belgrade (Serbia), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Pristina (Kosovo) and Tirana (Albania) during the project partners’ festivals and will enable selected composers to gain insight into cultural scenes of different countries and promote their work in local communities.

The project #synergy: Sharpening the capacities of the classical music industry in the Western Balkans, supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Commission, brings together six important festivals from the region: KotorArt Don Branko’s Music Days (Montenegro), Dubrovnik Summer Festival (Croatia), Belgrade Music Festival (Serbia), Ljubljana Festival (Slovenia), Vox Baroque Festival (Albania), and the Chopin Piano Fest Prishtina (Kosovo). The project aims to strengthen the capacities and sharing of know-how on a regional and European level, to provide new skills and connect cultural professionals, primarily those who work in the music festival and classical music sector, to encourage composers to write new pieces inspired by the local heritage of partner countries, as well as to facilitate networking and collaboration between young musicians, composers, and classical music organizations in the Western Balkans.
During 34 months, #synergy will gather twelve composers and over fifty emerging musicians and cultural managers. Six workshops for cultural professionals will be realized, along with twelve residencies for composers, which will result in twelve new pieces of music inspired by cultural heritage of the region and Europe.
