Chamonix, Argentiere, Les Houches, Le Tour, Vallorcine and Les Praz have luxury hotels, chalets, plenty of mid-priced hotel accommodations and endless apartments, ranging from small and basic to luxury condominiums with indoor pools, saunas and spas. You can also stay in between the main Chamonix valley resorts in small hamlets and isolated rural houses. But there is very little ski-in\/ski-out accommodation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Where to stay in the Chamonix Valley<\/h2>\n

Chamonix at 1035m above sea level, is a mountain town rather than a ski resort. Surrounded by steep-sided mountains, it has attracted tourists in summer and winter for more than 200 years. Chamonix’s pretty town centre is thronged with bars, clubs and restaurants that draw in visitors from the rest of the valley at night. It has two low altitude beginners\u2019 areas (Le Savoy and Les Planards) and two major lift stations for reaching the higher slopes: Plan Praz which accesses the Brevent end of the Flegere-Brevent ski area, and the Aiguille du Midi which is the starting point for the Vallee Blanche.\u00a0<\/strong>There are also frequent busses and trains to the other ski areas.<\/p>\n

On the outskirts of Chamonix, about 3km (2 miles) from the centre, is\u00a0<\/strong>Les Praz, which accesses La Flegere, the other end of the\u00a0Brevent-Flegere\u00a0ski domain. Whether Les Praz is still a separate village, or just a suburb of Chamonix, is arguable, but it\u2019s noticeably quieter, and a good compromise for those who want something a little more rural, whilst being just a short bus ride from the centre of the town.<\/p>\n

About 6km up the valley from Les Praz is Argentiere, home of the fearsome Grands Montets ski area. Argentiere is connected by train and bus to Chamonix, but it is more self-contained than Les Praz and has its own identity. There are enough remnants of the old mountain village to give Argentiere some character, and the surrounding mountains, glaciers and woods give it some lovely views. The high-rise apartment blocks near the lift, however, are definite eyesores, and the road running through the village is surprisingly busy.<\/p>\n

3km from Argentiere (and therefore about 12 km from Chamonix) is Le Tour. Situated at 1462m, Le Tour is the highest \u2018resort\u2019 in the valley, although it\u2019s just a collection of chalets and apartments clustered around a bus stop and lift station which gives access to the\u00a0Domaine de Balme\u00a0ski area.\u00a0The separate nursery slopes at La Vormaine are within easy walking distance too.<\/p>\n

At the other end of the Domaine de Balme ski area lies Vallorcine, a remote pretty village close to the Swiss border with its own lift and railway station, some rather grand old buildings (and a few modern residences which have been sensitively developed and blend in well) and lots of old-fashioned small wooden chalets. The railway station has trains both to Chamonix and to Martigny in Switzerland. It\u2019s easy to ski between Le Tour and Vallorcine but they are 9km apart by road and separated by a high mountain pass.<\/p>\n

Les Houches at an altitude of 1000m is the lowest resort in the valley and the closest to Geneva Airport. The ski area only reaches up to 1900m but it has the best tree-skiing. The village has expanded considerably and now includes\u00a0L\u2019Essert, Le Fouilly\u00a0and\u00a0La Cote,\u00a0as well as countless chalets stretching up the mountain, so it lacks an obvious centre. Much of the accommodation is in attractive low-rise buildings surrounded by trees and sufficiently far away from the N205 motorway to be untroubled by it, but it can be a long walk (or a short bus\/car ride) to the two main lift stations at\u00a0Prarion\u00a0and\u00a0Bellevue, which are nearly a kilometre apart.<\/p>\n

Les Aiglons Hotel<\/a> (4 stars) has large luxurious rooms that can be booked for short breaks as well as longer visits. Keen skiers will love its location in Chamonix: about 5 minutes\u2019 walk from the Aiguille du Midi cable car, and 1 minute away from the main Chamonix Sud bus station, from where busses depart for all the Chamonix valley ski areas and Courmayeur, St Gervais and Megeve, allowing guests to make full use of their lift passes. It has a spa, heated outdoor pool, covered car park, bar and restaurant, plus an on-site Sanglard Sports\/Skimium ski rental outlet.<\/p>\n

Other hotels in or near the centre of Chamonix with very high previous guest ratings include Hotel Mont Blanc <\/a>(5 stars), Grand Hotel des Alpes<\/a> (5 stars), Le Hameau Albert 1er<\/a> (5 stars), Auberge du Bois Prin<\/a> (4 stars), Heliopic Hotel and Spa <\/a>(4 stars), Chalet-H\u00f4tel Hermitage<\/a> (4 stars), Le Faucigny<\/a> (3 stars), Oustalet <\/a>(3 stars), Auberge du Manoir<\/a> (3 stars), H\u00f4tel de l\u2019Arve <\/a>(3 stars), Hotel le Chamonix<\/a> (2 stars) and Hotel la Verticale<\/a> (1 star). There are plenty of apartments too. At the top end, Le Paradis 24<\/a>, Le Ginabelle<\/a>, Les Balcons du Savoy<\/a> and La Riviere <\/a>apartment complexes regularly get high ratings. In Les Praz, hotels highly rated by guests include Hotel Le Labrador <\/a>(3 stars), Hotel Eden<\/a> (3 stars) and Hotel Le Castel <\/a>(no stars). The self-catering apartment Maya<\/a> is also consistently popular.<\/p>\n

Hotels and Apartments in Argentiere<\/h3>\n

Les Grands Montets<\/a> (4 stars) is at the bottom of the Grands Montets ski area, has all the 4-star luxuries you would expect (swimming pool, sauna etc) and regularly gets good reviews from previous guests.\u00a0 La Couronne<\/a> (3 stars) and Le Dahu<\/a> (2 stars) are next door to one another on the road from Chamonix. There is a ski bus stop within 100m of them, but if you want to walk to\/from the Grands Montets lift station and home piste, it only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. La Couronne is in an attractive and atmospheric old building, and its walls are lined with old photographs from the late 19th and early 20th century showing what Argentiere looked like in that era, as well as 3D maps of the surrounding mountains. It’s family-run and has excellent service. The more modern Dahu has a restaurant which is a cut above what you would expect from a 2-star hotel. Both hotels are close to Argentiere’s most popular bars – The Office and The Savoy. Argentiere also has plenty of self-catered apartments; the most popular complexes include\u00a0Residence Grand Roc<\/a> and Residence de Lognan.<\/a><\/p>\n

Hotels and Apartments in Le Tour and Vallorcine<\/h3>\n

Vallorcine and Le Tour are very apartment-dominated. Two of the best complexes are the Aparthotel R\u00e9sidence & Spa Vallorcine Mont-Blanc<\/a> (Vallorcine) and\u00a0 Chalet Victoire<\/a> (Le Tour). But these are just the tip of a very large iceberg which includes plenty of budget options, so use the accommodation finder below to search for more.<\/p>\n

Hotels and Apartments in Les Houches<\/h3>\n

Hotels which regularly get high ratings from previous guests include A<\/strong>uberge le Montagny<\/a> (3 stars), RockyPop Hotel<\/a> (3 stars) and Les Campanules<\/a> (2 stars). None of them have the luxury of the CGH Hameau de Pierre Blanche<\/a> which is an apartment complex but is graded as an ApartHotel because of the services and facilities on offer.<\/p>\n
